My IPTV subscription says "1 connection". What exactly does this mean? Can I still watch on my phone if the TV is already on? And what happens if I exceed the limit?

A "1 connection" or "1 simultaneous stream" subscription means only one device can actively stream at any time. If your TV is playing a channel, a second device logging in will either: (a) receive an authentication error, (b) stop the first stream automatically, or (c) wait in a queue, depending on how the provider implements it.

The limit applies to active streaming, not to devices being logged in. You can have TiviMate configured on five devices all with your credentials saved. But if you actually play a channel on two devices at the same time, the second one will hit the connection limit.

UK user — I discovered the limit when my wife started watching on the bedroom TV while I was watching in the living room. The bedroom TV authentication failed. Called support, upgraded to a 2-connection subscription. Problem solved. The upgrade was straightforward and the monthly cost increase was modest.

Ireland — some providers distinguish between "connections" and "devices". "Connections" means simultaneous active streams. "Devices" means authorised devices. Check with your provider whether your plan limits active streams, total registered devices, or both.

Canada — workaround for testing without upgrading: be aware that catch-up and VOD playback also count as active connections on most services. If you are watching live TV and your partner wants to use catch-up, that is two simultaneous connections. Budget accordingly.

How to know if you have hit the limit: on most apps the authentication error message will say something like "Maximum connections reached" or "Connection limit exceeded". The exact wording varies by provider.

Australia — one thing to note: if your IPTV app crashes or the device loses power while streaming, the connection may remain "active" on the provider's server for a few minutes before timing out. If you restart the device immediately and get a "max connections" error even though nothing else is streaming, wait 5 minutes for the timed-out connection to clear.

New Zealand — managing connections effectively: close your IPTV app properly when you finish watching rather than just turning off the TV. Many apps maintain the connection in the background even when you switch to another TV input. A proper app close releases the connection immediately.
