My MAG remote has become very unreliable — I press buttons and nothing happens, or there is a long delay. Sometimes it works fine for a few minutes then stops. Is this the remote or the MAG itself?
MAG remote issues are almost always the remote rather than the MAG box itself. The MAG uses a standard infrared remote and infrared remotes are subject to several common failure modes:\n\n**Battery issues (most common):**\n• Check battery level — even batteries that seem charged can have insufficient peak current for infrared transmissions\n• Try with fresh AA or AAA batteries (whichever your model uses)\n• Even if the remote's indicator light shows red when pressing buttons, the battery may not have enough current for consistent infrared pulses
**Infrared interference:**\n• Other IR devices (other remotes, some LED lights, sunlight) can interfere with the MAG remote signal\n• Make sure the IR receiver on the front of the MAG is not in direct sunlight\n• Some LED bulbs flicker at frequencies that interfere with IR signals — try dimming or turning off lights in the room when testing
**Battery contact corrosion:**\n• If the remote worked before but has become intermittent: open the battery compartment and look at the metal contacts\n• Slight corrosion appears as a white or blue-green powder\n• Clean contacts with a pencil eraser or a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar, then dry completely
UK user — intermittent response that varies by distance was my symptom. Fresh batteries fixed it immediately. Rechargeable batteries in particular have lower peak current than alkaline batteries which can cause exactly the "inconsistent at normal distance" behaviour.
Ireland — tried new batteries, tried cleaning contacts, still unreliable. Replaced the remote. MAG replacement remotes are inexpensive and available from online retailers. Compatible remotes are sold for specific MAG models — make sure to buy the right model.
Canada — if the remote is fine but the MAG is slow to respond to button presses (lag of 1–2 seconds between press and action): this is a MAG processing issue, not a remote issue. The portal UI is running slowly. A firmware update or portal cache clear may help.
Portal cache clear on MAG: Settings → Advanced Settings → Portal Cache → Clear. Or on some firmware versions: Settings → Middleware section → Cache → Clear Portal Cache. After clearing, the portal will reload all data on next boot, which resolves many sluggish UI issues.
Australia — one more tip: if you use the MAG in a bright room, the IR receiver on the front of the MAG can become saturated with ambient light, reducing its sensitivity to the remote's IR signal. Try briefly covering the front of the MAG to block ambient light while pressing the remote button. If it works better covered, ambient light is the issue.
