MAG device firmware update: when to update and how to do it safely

My MAG box prompted me with a firmware update notification. Should I update? I am nervous about breaking something that currently works perfectly. When is it safe or beneficial to update MAG firmware?

The general rule with MAG firmware: if everything is working well, "don't fix what isn't broken" applies. However, there are situations where updating is beneficial or necessary:\n\n**Update when:**\n• You are experiencing a specific issue that the release notes mention as fixed\n• Your portal provider specifically recommends a firmware version\n• A security vulnerability has been announced for your current firmware\n• Portal compatibility issues develop over time as the portal software is updated

**Do not update when:**\n• Everything is working perfectly and there is no specific reason to update\n• You are in the middle of a viewing session — always update when you can afford downtime\n• You have had bad experiences with firmware updates on this box before\n\nBefore any firmware update: note down your current portal URL (write it on paper), take photos of your current Settings screens, and have your provider's support details ready.

UK user — I updated my MAG 524 firmware because the portal was loading slowly after the provider updated their software. The newer firmware resolved the portal compatibility issue. But I was cautious: I verified the firmware version was officially released by Infomir (the MAG manufacturer) before updating.

Always download firmware from the official Infomir website or update via the built-in "Update via Internet" option in the MAG settings. Never update from third-party sources — unofficial firmware can permanently break the device or introduce security vulnerabilities.

Ireland — my MAG reset its portal URL after a firmware update. This is the most common problem people experience. The portal URL field is cleared in some firmware updates. This is why writing it down before updating is essential — you just re-enter it after the update and everything works.

How to update safely:\n\n1. Settings → General → Note down all current settings\n2. Write down the portal URL on paper\n3. Settings → General → Firmware Update → Update via Internet\n4. Allow the download and installation to complete without interruption\n5. After restart, go to Settings → Servers → Portal URL and re-enter if needed

Canada — update timing tip: update in the afternoon, not late at night. If the update causes any issue you need to troubleshoot, you want to have several hours of active time available. Updating at 11pm and discovering the portal URL cleared means your evening watching is done.

Australia — after firmware update, also check the time zone settings. Firmware updates sometimes reset the time zone to default (often UTC) which causes EPG timing issues immediately. Verify Settings → General → Time Zone shows your correct region.
