MAG set-top boxes are the simplest IPTV devices available. This guide walks you through the complete first-time setup, including the most common issues and how to resolve them.

What is a MAG Device?

MAG devices (manufactured by Infomir) are dedicated set-top boxes designed specifically for IPTV. Unlike Android TV boxes, they do not run apps. Instead, they connect to a single portal URL provided by your IPTV service and load channels directly. This simplicity makes them ideal for non-technical households.

Initial Physical Setup

1. Connect the MAG to your TV via HDMI
2. Connect to your router via the included Ethernet cable (or via Wi-Fi if required)
3. Connect the power supply and turn on
4. The MAG will boot over 1–2 minutes — you will see the Infomir splash screen

Entering the Portal URL

After boot, navigate to Settings → Servers → Portal URL. Using the remote keyboard:

1. Delete any existing content in the URL field
2. Carefully type your portal URL exactly as provided by your service
3. The URL is case-sensitive — check each character carefully
4. Press OK to save

Return to the main screen. The MAG will attempt to connect to the portal. First connection takes 30–60 seconds as the channel list downloads.

Essential Settings to Configure

Time Zone: Settings → General → Time Zone. Set to your correct local time zone. Incorrect time zone causes EPG to show programme times shifted by one or more hours.

DNS: Settings → Network → DNS1. Change from your ISP default to 1.1.1.1. This resolves ISP DNS filtering issues that commonly affect portal connections in UK and Ireland.

Screen Resolution: Settings → General → Screen Resolution. Set to match your TV (usually 1080p or 4K depending on your TV and MAG model).

Common Setup Problems

"Portal not available" error: Change DNS to 1.1.1.1 as described above. This resolves approximately 70% of portal connection failures in UK/Ireland.

Channels play but EPG is empty: Your provider's EPG may need separate configuration tied to your MAG MAC address. Contact your provider with your MAC address (found in Settings → Information) to verify EPG setup.

Portal URL accepted but blank screen: Usually a firmware issue. Settings → General → Firmware Update → Update via Internet. Note: write down the portal URL before updating, as firmware updates sometimes clear this field.

MAG for Non-Technical Households

The MAG is the best IPTV device for households with non-technical users. Once set up, the experience is: turn on TV → select the MAG HDMI input → watch. There are no apps to update, no storage to manage, and no system to maintain. It simply works.

Note the MAG MAC address (printed on the box and shown in Settings → Information). You will need this if you contact support or replace the device.
