Chromecast with Google TV is an increasingly popular IPTV device. This guide covers which IPTV apps work on Google TV, how to install them, and the key tips for getting the best performance.
Android TV and Google TV are both Android-based operating systems. Google TV is the newer interface layer that sits on top of Android TV, providing a more content-focused home screen. For IPTV purposes, they are essentially the same: apps that run on Android TV run on Google TV, with the same sideloading requirements.
• IPTV Smarters Pro: Available on Google Play. Install directly. Good starting point.
• OTT Navigator: Available on Google Play. Excellent for VOD browsing.
• GSE Smart IPTV: Available on Google Play.
TiviMate and XCIPTV are not on Google Play and require sideloading:
How to enable developer mode on Chromecast with Google TV:
1. Settings → System → About
2. Scroll to "Android TV OS Build" and click it 7 times
3. Developer options are now unlocked
4. Settings → System → Developer Options → USB Debugging → enable
Installing via Downloader:
1. Install Downloader from Google Play
2. In Downloader settings, allow it to install apps
3. Open Downloader and enter the APK URL for TiviMate or XCIPTV
4. Download and install
The Chromecast with Google TV uses a MediaTek chipset with dedicated hardware video decode. HD and 1080p IPTV streams play without issues. 4K content plays well on most streams. Very high-bitrate 4K HDR (above 40 Mbps) may occasionally stutter — an external Android TV box is better for this use case.
The Chromecast with Google TV has only 8 GB internal storage. With TiviMate, XCIPTV, OTT Navigator, and Google Play apps installed, storage fills up relatively quickly. Choose your apps thoughtfully and clear caches regularly via Settings → Apps.
The Chromecast remote has fewer dedicated buttons than the Firestick remote. Some IPTV app shortcuts (long-press for context menus, dedicated back buttons) work differently. TiviMate in particular benefits from a TV remote with a dedicated menu button — check that your app of choice works well with the Chromecast remote before committing.
