Just picked up an Android TV box. What settings give the best streaming quality?

First: set the output resolution in the TV box video settings to match your TV's native resolution.

Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Resolution (or similar path depending on model).

Right. The box resolution is the display output. The app quality is the stream quality.

Enable hardware video decoding in the app settings. This offloads processing to the dedicated chip.

Hardware: more efficient, less heat, better battery life (if applicable). Software: more CPU usage.

Always use hardware decoding on a TV box unless you see visual glitches (green blocks, artifacts).

Frame rate also matters. Set the TV box to output at the frame rate of your content.

Some boxes have auto frame rate matching — very useful for mixed content libraries.

The display settings section is often overlooked. Worth spending 10 minutes optimizing.
