Starting this thread to share my experience and hear from others in the community. Happy to discuss in detail.

I've used both app-based and MAG-based setups for over 2 years. Happy to compare.

MAG for reliability at home; app-based for flexibility and multi-device use.

MAG boxes are single-purpose hardware. No background apps competing for resources.

Dedicated hardware for one task does generally mean more consistent performance.

App-based has the obvious advantage of working on phones, tablets, TVs, etc.

App-based on multiple platforms means the service needs to maintain multiple apps.

Quality of apps varies. The Android app and the Fire TV app might have different performance.

I found the Android app from the same provider to be significantly better than their Fire TV app.

That's a useful data point. Worth testing both on your devices before deciding.

MAG boxes are relatively inexpensive and are a good dedicated home streaming solution.

Worth investing in a newer MAG if you're going the MAG route. Older hardware has limitations.
