Android TV box hardware longevity: how long should they last?

I have been through three Android TV boxes in five years. Here is what I learned about extending hardware lifespan.

The main causes of premature failure: overheating, power supply issues, and storage corruption.

Proper ventilation is critical. Never stack other devices on top of the box or place it in an enclosed cabinet.

I had two boxes fail from overheating. Both were in a closed entertainment cabinet with no airflow.

Most chips are rated to 85°C. Surface temperatures above 50°C suggest inadequate cooling.

Many boxes have thermal throttling that reduces performance before damage, but sustained heat degrades components.

A small desk fan directed at the box can extend lifespan significantly in warm environments.

Some enthusiasts add passive heatsinks to their boxes for better thermal management.

Using an underpowered or poor-quality USB power adapter causes instability and can corrupt storage.

Always use the power adapter that came with the box, or match the voltage and amperage specifications exactly.

For the OS and apps: internal. For recordings: external USB drive to reduce write wear on internal storage.

The internal eMMC storage in most boxes has a finite write cycle limit. Minimize unnecessary writes.

Avoid moving large files to and from internal storage repeatedly. Use it primarily for apps.

Factory reset clears storage corruption that accumulates over years. Doing it every 2 years helps.

My current Nvidia Shield is 4 years old and runs perfectly. The Shield uses higher-quality components.
