I was a committed MAG user for 18 months before switching to an Android TV box. This is my honest comparison based on real daily use — not specs on paper.

This kind of long-term real usage comparison is far more valuable than spec sheet comparisons. Thanks for documenting this.

The switch was driven by VOD access. My provider added a full VOD library that was only accessible through their Android app, not the MAG portal. I was paying for content I could not reach.

That access gap — portal supports live channels but not VOD — is increasingly common as providers expand beyond just live TV.

MAG portal experience: extremely simple. Boot, channels load, watch. No updates, no app management, no crashes. Perfect for non-technical users.

Android TV box experience: more complex initially but much more capable once configured. TiviMate gave me features the MAG portal never had — catch-up, multi-screen EPG browsing, VOD integration.

The boot time. MAG is ready in 30 seconds. My Android box takes 90 seconds to be usable. Small difference but noticeable daily.

Also the MAG remote. More buttons, dedicated functions. Android TV remotes feel stripped-down by comparison.

App flexibility. I can run multiple provider apps, switch between them instantly, and compare quality. That was not possible with the portal-locked MAG experience.

The Netflix and YouTube integration on the Android box was also a genuine improvement. Having all content on one device without input switching is convenient.

For technical users who want maximum flexibility and access to their provider's full feature set, Android TV box is the better choice.

For non-technical users or households where simplicity is prioritized over features, MAG is still excellent.

The choice ultimately depends on what your provider offers and how much technical setup you are willing to do.
