This thread is for MetroStream users who use MAG devices. Share your setup experience, portal questions, and any tips. First-time MAG users especially welcome.
 
New to MAG devices here. Set up a MAG 524 last week for MetroStream. The setup was straightforward following their guide — enter the portal URL, wait for the portal to load. Done.
 
Checked in Settings → Information: version 2.21.4. It came with this version and I have not updated it since everything works.
 
2.21.4 is stable. No need to update if everything is working — that is the general advice with MAG firmware.
 
UK user — had an issue where the portal would not load after I moved house and got a new router. Fixed it by power cycling the MAG after the router change and then clearing the portal cache in Settings → Advanced Settings.
 
Router changes are a common cause of MAG portal issues. Power cycle and cache clear nearly always resolves it.
 
Ireland — my MAG 256 shows the channel list but when I click a channel nothing plays. Black screen for 2-3 seconds then back to the list.
 
Black screen on channel click usually means the streams are connecting but something is blocking playback. Check whether your ISP might be intercepting video traffic — try changing DNS to 1.1.1.1 in the MAG network settings.
 
Changed DNS to 1.1.1.1 as suggested. Channels now play immediately. Thank you — that fix took 5 minutes after several days of troubleshooting.
 
DNS fix resolving stream playback is a common pattern. ISPs occasionally block or redirect video CDN traffic and alternative DNS bypasses this.
 
MAG is simpler — plug in, enter portal URL, watch. No app management, no updates, no complexity. Android TV box is more flexible but requires more setup and maintenance. For non-technical users or shared households, MAG is often better.
 
That makes sense. My parents use the MAG and would have no chance with an Android box.
 
Australia — EPG timing on my MAG was off by one hour. Fixed by setting the correct time zone in MAG settings. The local time display in Settings showed UTC, not local time.
 
Time zone is a commonly missed step in MAG setup. Incorrect time zone causes EPG to show programmes shifted by one or more hours.
 
USA — asked support about using the same subscription on both a MAG and a smartphone app simultaneously. They explained the simultaneous connection limit clearly. Ended up upgrading to a two-connection plan.
 
Understanding connection limits is important. Most subscriptions allow one simultaneous stream by default. Very clear to verify before expecting to use multiple devices.
 
New Zealand — MAG remote buttons were non-responsive after a few months. Cleaned the contacts with a pencil eraser as suggested in the MAG remote troubleshooting guide. Working again.
 
Eraser on battery contacts is a classic fix. Oxidation prevents good contact even with new batteries.
 
UK — MAG vs Android TV box after 8 months on MAG: for my use case (one person, one TV, simple requirements) the MAG is perfect. I do not miss the complexity of app management.
