After helping many friends set up their first MAG device I put together this pre-setup checklist. Doing these in order prevents the most common first-time problems.

This is exactly what I needed when I started. Wish I had found this before spending 3 hours troubleshooting.

The checklist order matters. People who skip to step 5 before completing steps 1-4 end up with connection issues.

Full pre-setup checklist:
1. Connect MAG to TV with HDMI cable.
2. Connect MAG to router with Ethernet cable (not Wi-Fi for initial setup).
3. Note the MAC address from the sticker on the bottom of the device.
4. Confirm your service provider has this MAC address registered.
5. Power on the MAG — wait for it to fully boot (45-90 seconds).
6. Enter portal URL from Settings → Servers → Portal.
7. Wait 30-60 seconds for the portal to load.

Point 4 is critical. Many providers require MAC registration before the portal will work. Without this step you will get endless loading screens.

Go to Settings → Network → Network Interface in the MAG menu. The MAC address is shown there regardless of sticker condition.

For initial setup use 1080p. Once the portal is confirmed working, you can increase to 4K if your service and TV support it. Starting at 4K can cause blank screens if the TV or service does not support that resolution properly.

Also set the correct time zone in Settings → Time before entering the portal URL. Incorrect time causes EPG mismatches that confuse first-time users into thinking something is broken.

I always set date and time manually before portal entry on new MAG setups. Saves confusion later.

The Ethernet recommendation is important. Wi-Fi works but Ethernet removes one variable during initial setup troubleshooting.

After the portal loads for the first time, verify channels load before considering setup complete. A portal loading without channels playing usually indicates a different issue.

Great comprehensive guide. Bookmarking this for the next time I help someone.
