Just received my MAG box and followed the setup instructions. Entered the portal URL exactly as given, pressed OK, and now I only see a black screen. The loading spinner appeared briefly then nothing. Sharing what fixed it.

What is the exact portal URL format you entered? Does it begin with http:// or was it entered without the protocol?

Missing http:// is the most common cause. MAG boxes require the full URL with the protocol prefix. Without it the device does not know how to connect.

Also try removing any trailing slash from the URL. Some MAG firmware versions reject URLs that end with a slash character.

Step by step to re-enter correctly:
1. On the MAG home screen press the MENU button.
2. Navigate to Settings → Servers → Portal.
3. Clear the existing entry completely.
4. Type the URL starting with http:// followed by the address.
5. Do not add a trailing slash at the end.
6. Press OK and wait 30 seconds for the portal to load.

I had the same black screen issue. The fix for me was a different one — the portal server was temporarily down. Waited 2 hours and it loaded fine.

If the URL is wrong, the MAG shows an error message. If it shows a black screen with a spinner that disappears, the URL resolved but the server returned an empty response. That usually means server-side issue.

Also check: is your MAG connected by Ethernet or Wi-Fi? Black screen can occur on weak Wi-Fi if the portal page is too large to load reliably.

Ethernet is always recommended for MAG initial setup. Switch to wired for the first setup, even if you plan to use Wi-Fi later.

SOLVED for me: I had a typo in the URL — one character off. Compared character by character with the confirmation email and found it. Corrected, loaded fine. Always double-check URLs against the original source.

Good resolution. For others: the MAG keyboard is small and slow. Consider using a USB keyboard for URL entry to avoid typos.
