DNS over HTTPS (DoH): does it actually improve streaming performance?

I spent two weeks testing standard DNS versus DNS over HTTPS for streaming. Here are the results.

DoH encrypts your DNS queries, preventing ISPs from seeing which domains you are resolving.

This can bypass certain ISP-level domain blocking without needing a full VPN.

Most modern routers support DoH under DNS settings. Look for a "DNS over HTTPS" option.

On Asus routers: WAN → DNSPrivacy Protocol → DNS-over-HTTPS. Enter a DoH provider like 1.1.1.1.

Faster DNS means marginally faster channel loading but not measurably better stream quality.

My specific ISP was blocking certain streaming CDN domains. DoH bypassed the block completely.

Both. Configure at router level to protect all devices, or per-device in browser/OS settings.

Windows 11 has DoH support built in: Settings → Network → DNS settings → DNS over HTTPS.

For non-technical users, configuring it at the router level protects all devices automatically.
